The George Smith Scholarship
Retired Division Chief/Fire Marshall George Smith was the first African American hired as a firefighter for the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. He honorably served the community for 28 years and rose to the upper ranks of the JFRD. In honor of his strength and dedication, the Jacksonville Brotherhood of Firefighters has established the George Smith Scholarship.
The George Smith Scholarship is awarded to candidates in Duval County that are perusing the completion of an Emergency Medical Technician course or the Firefighter Minimum Standards course. Since 2005, six scholarship recipients have received their certifications and are now employed with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
The amount available for the 2010 calendar year is $6000.00 which is awarded in 500.00 increments to each eligible candidate. Eligible candidates must have a high school diploma or GED. He/she must be at least 18 years of age, and a current student in good standings at an accredited Emergency Medical Technician program or a Minimum Standards course recognized by the State of Florida.
