FIRE EXPLORER POST 83

Where is your future taking you?

If you're looking for a way to give back to your community, learn life-saving skills, and learn how you can get into one of the best fire departments in the nation, then the Fire Explorer's Program has everything you need.

For years, the Jacksonville Brotherhood of Firefighters and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department have teamed up to help teenagers and young adults prepare for a career in firefighting and Emergency Medical Services. Over the years, many young people have taken advantage the program and many of those former Explorers from Post 83 now work for the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, or for other fire departments in the region.

What is Exploring all about?

Are you interested in becoming a Firefighter? Do you know what Firefighters do? Do you think it is just riding around on a big truck and putting out fires? What education, training and experience are necessary to become a firefighter? How hard is the job? What is the work schedule? Will I like the job?

If you are interested in becoming a firefighter, you probably have these and dozens more questions about finding out what firefighters do. One way of learning about this career while you are a young adult is to become a Fire Explorer.

Fire Explorer Post 83

Fire Explorer Post 83 is hosted by the Jacksonville Brotherhood of Firefighters and sponsored by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Exploring is a coed division of Boy Scouts of America. Explorers receive class room training on the basics of firefighting and related skills, real life hands on training at the Jacksonville Fire/Rescue Training Academy. They also learn CPR, participate in community events and are able to do ride-A-longs at fire stations.

Purpose

The purpose of Exploring is to teach young adults life skills, provide a positive environment in which to learn, teach young adults the value of community service and to expose them to the education and skills necessary to pursue a career in the fire service. Some of the Explorers may find that they would like to pursue this as a career; some may find that it is not what they expected, while some may find that although they do not want to go into the field as a career, they may still enjoy it as a hobby or volunteer work.

There are many other benefits to joining, such as the chance to make life-long connections to community and civic leaders. It is an excellent way to make your college application more appealing to admissions officers. And most importantly, you’ll make friends and you’ll make a difference.
